At Amaroo@Home, we have been providing specialised home care to the Denmark community for over 7 years.
We are privileged to support the wellbeing of many residents within the Denmark area, each with their own unique journey.
In recognition of the remarkable lives we get to be a part of, we are thrilled to share with you the stories of several individuals from our Amaroo@Home community.
In our fifth and final blog post in this series, we introduce you to Beth.
Meet Beth
Beth, now aged in her 80s, has dedicated much of her life to volunteer work and was even awarded the Order of Australia for her efforts.
She has lived in Denmark nearly all her life, with her family moving from Perth in 1959.
Her ties to the area extend generations, as her grandfather frequently worked in Denmark.
“My grandfather was a government surveyor in Abany in 1912. Back then the railway would extend out past the sand bar.
As soon as the water got too high for the railway, he and his team would come and manually open the sand bar,” Beth explains.
Building a life
Beth’s father bought the land surrounding Little River in Denmark, where she lived with her parents and in later years, her husband and children.
She worked as a cleaner for the Shire for many years, responsible for cleaning town facilities which included the dentist surgery, tourist bureau and post office. Once several of these places closed, Beth worked as a personal cleaner in people’s homes.
“I actually became a carer for four of my cleaning clients because they were older and needed the extra help at home.”
In 1965, Beth was involved in a committee to initiate a Scout Group in Denmark. She then became a Scout Leader and is still part of the organisation to this day.
Following in her mother’s footsteps
Beth was also a member for the Cemetery Committee and the Country Women’s Association and in 2000 was awarded the Order of Australia for her contributions.
Her hardworking spirit, Beth explains, was passed on by her mother, who also received the Order of Australia.
“My mother was Secretary of the Repertory Club which is now known as the Playhouse Theatre in Perth for many years. She volunteered, and contributed to the growth of our school and she was also, at the time, the youngest lady to ever be made a Justice of the Peace.”
Accessing home care
Beth continues to reside in Denmark and accesses Amaroo@Home to help her around the house. She receives domestic assistance from our Amaroo@Home team once a fortnight.
“I really appreciate their help. I tell them I’m here but I’m not looking because they know cleaning was my profession for many years,” Beth jokes.
She also receives gardening support once a fortnight and notes that the maintenance team extend an extra helping hand wherever possible.
“The gardening help is wonderful because I’ve reached a stage where I can’t maintain it myself. The handy man also helps me with any other odd jobs I have around the house.”
At Amaroo@Home, we strive to ensure that clients like Beth get the most out of their Home Care Package. Our mission is to provide all the support they need to stay happy and healthy in the comfort of their own home.
