International Nurses Day – Meet Amelyn

In celebration of International Nurses Day, we have interviewed our nurses at Amaroo who go above and beyond every day for our clients and residents.

In our first blog post, we introduce you to our Facility Manager at Buckley Caring Centre – Amelyn.

Meet Amelyn

Amelyn’s journey at Amaroo first began in 2022 when she joined Buckley Caring Centre in the position of Facility Manager. However, nursing was not the first profession that Amelyn pursued.

“I originally went to university back home in the Philippines and completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology. I worked as a HR Assistant & Psychometrician for four years, but I always felt like something was missing”, Amelyn explains.

It didn’t take too long for Amelyn to realise that she enjoyed working with people, however she also wanted to dedicate her life to helping them.

“I wanted to make a difference to people’s lives, in as little or as big a way as possible. Taking this into consideration, I decided that I wanted to return to university and study a Bachelor of Nursing.”

Passion turned profession

As soon as Amelyn graduated from university, she worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse in a local hospital. However, it wasn’t long before she returned to university.

“I decided I wanted to develop my skills and continue to push myself to be the best I could possibly be, so I returned to university and studied my master’s degree.”

During this time, Amelyn also worked at the local college and taught nursing students for two years.

Making the move to Australia

“Since my father and brother were both working in America, I decided to take the licensure exam so I could join them and continue my work as a qualified nurse there”, Amelyn explains.

“I ended up qualifying in both New York and Vermont, however it was taking a little longer to process my immigrant visa than originally expected.

I decided to take the chance on moving to a new country on my own and applied to move to Australia.”

The rest was history, and Amelyn moved to Perth in 2010.

Nursing in the aged care sector

“To be able to practice as a nurse in Australia, I had to go back to university and complete a conversion course.”

After completing this course at Curtin University, Amelyn officially began her nursing career in Australia in the aged care sector.

“After I began working in aged care, I never looked back. It can be challenging, however it’s such a rewarding career path. Every day I come into work, I know that I’m making a difference to the lives of the people I serve. It completes me as a person”.

Working at Amaroo

“I have been working at Amaroo for almost two years now, and by far my most favourite part of the job is getting to know our residents and learning about their life experiences.”

Amelyn also prides herself on ensuring their journey in residential care is comfortable and enjoyable.

“Our caring centres are their home, and I’m so proud to lead a team that always prioritises the wellbeing of our residents.

Everyday we come into work we are changing lives and leaving an everlasting impression on them and their family, and for that, I’m grateful.”
