A sizzling hot Amaroo 1000 is over (October 09)
The winner of the Amaroo 1000 cup was Heather Buckingham riding for Gorey Electrical. Heather is a Gosnells resident who has been getting around on her gopher for only about four or five months.
She was absolutely determined to win, she says, and managed to hang on to her lead, knowing that the more powerful machines were catching her up rapidly. She took a very dim view of some distracting tactics used by one of her opponents at the outset of the two circuit race, although she does acknowledge that they were part of the fun of the event. Because some gophers have more oomph than others, the race was handicapped by John Bormolini of Gosnells Scooters &Mobility World so that everyone had some chance of being first. Heather is very excited about her win, which was a hot topic at her Church the next day.
Second place went to Peter Manchee, riding for Peaceful Funerals. Peter is President of the Amaroo Social Club. In third place was Mary Henderson, a resident at Amaroo, riding for Trevor Carpets.

Picture shows third, second and first place-getters left to right and standing behind are Andrea Bochenek, Lisa & John Bormolini and son Sam who were major organisers of the day.
Other contestants in the race who had all qualified through the heats were John Morris for RJ Skylights & Coral Morris for Batteryworld. John and Coral are well-known for their participation and sense of fun around Amaroo Village, Frank Lamb rode for Kelmscott Physio, Mary Clark for Thriftylink Hardware, and Marjorie Watters for Armadale Mowers World.
The celebrity race featured five riders including both the President of Amaroo, Ross Jones and the CEO of Amaroo, David Fenwick, John Lawrence of Peaceful Funerals, Michelle Lennox, the Branch Manager of Bendigo Bank, as well as the race organizer and major sponsor from Gosnells Scooter & Mobility World, John Bormolini, who had a few minutes off his feet as a result.

The picture shows John Bormolini, riding for John & Murray Autos, Michelle Lennox for Bendigo Bank, Ross Jones for Biddulph & Turley, David Fenwick for Prosser Toyota and John Lawrence for Peaceful Funerals.

Paddy dressed as Charlie Chaplin
They were joined as usual by celebrity guest Paddy McWaters as a Charlie Chaplin look-alike on a three wheeler and Tim Horner, another well-known Amaroo 1000 celebrity on a motor bike. Paddy won the award for the best-dressed motorized machine.
The Fun Race featured intrepid fun-seeker gopher riders such as John Hansen, Amaroo’s Manager Property & Assets, as well as Jan Ricks, an honorary member of the Amaroo Board. Other riders were Cos from Thriftylink Hardware riding for Ray White,
The Fun Race ends in a win for Joshua Grey. He was followed by Karl McLeod and John Hansen. Racers had to abandon their gophers and do the final stint on foot.
Jenny Seaton of Curtin fm was the MC of the event and did a stirling job in the heat keeping the crowd entertained and amused as she called the heats and races, and announced speakers in the Gosnells Seniors Care Expo Marquee.
Jenny Seaton interviews Jim Dunlop who is announcing the winner of the Gopher Challenge. This involved amateur gopher riders negotiating an obstacle course as a time trial.

Fundraising (December 08)
John Hansen, Manager Property & Assets had the idea of donating the equipment from the old Gosnells Hospital to Korea because it had been superceded in Australia and can’t be sold here. He made contact with the mission agency which is active in North Korea and supports hospitals and orphanages with donations of aid, including food, clothing and equipment. The Amaroo Board supported this plan. Greg O’Connor from the mission says the doctors in the hospitals there are excited about this gift. There is just one small snag. We need to raise the $15,000 to pay for the container. John Hansen invites you all to a presentation on 5th February at 3 pm at Nancye Jones to meet Greg O Connor and see a DVD about some of the projects they have been involved in. One is an orphanage. The picture on the left shows some of the gorgeous North Korean children after two months in the orphanage receiving proper care. Thanks to Gosnells Village volunteers, Marjorie Welsh and Olive Morgan, for their help with the Flyers for the Open Day in Denmark, and to volunteers from Lions in Denmark, including Will Farquharson, who all contributed with a smile.
